While we understand your discomfort, try to stay calm and as comfortable as possible so that you can remain somewhat cool until our experts arrive at your aid. Keep reading to find out about our tips on how to stay cool when you have a broken AC while you are waiting for a technician to arrive.

HOW TO STAY COOL WITH A BROKEN AC:

  • CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR CEILING FAN’S BLADES
  • CLOSE YOUR WINDOW TREATMENTS AND BLINDS IN THE DAYTIME
  • OPEN YOUR WINDOWS AT NIGHTTIME
  • AVOID OPENING ANY EXTERIOR DOORS TO YOUR HOME
  • STAY AWAY FROM USING LARGE HEAT-INDUCING APPLIANCES
  • CREATE YOUR OWN MAKESHIFT AC

CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR CEILING FAN’S BLADES

Typically, ceiling fans are preset to a clockwise rotation. This direction pushes air downward, providing an extra bit of cool air where you need it. However, when your air conditioner is not functioning, it’s prudent to set your ceiling fans to a counterclockwise setting. This adjustment ensures you maximize the cooling effect, even without an operational air conditioner.

If you want to help stay cool in the meantime, switch your ceiling fans to counterclockwise and let the cool breeze spread around the room. Keep in mind that if you can’t locate the switch, it’s usually at the base of the mounted fixture.

CLOSE YOUR WINDOW TREATMENTS AND BLINDS IN THE DAYTIME

Another way is to block the sunlight by pulling down your blinds or drapes. Although sunlight uplifts our mood, direct sunlight during such times might not be suitable. So, it’s better to shut all the windows and blinds in the daytime. Lastly, keep your external doors closed as much as possible to avoid warm air from infiltrating your home.

OPEN YOUR WINDOWS AT NIGHTTIME

As night falls, the outdoor temperature naturally decreases, providing natural comfort. So, feel free to open your windows in the evening for a refreshing and cooler indoor atmosphere. Yet, remember to close them again in the morning.

AVOID OPENING ANY EXTERIOR DOORS TO YOUR HOME

To maintain optimal home comfort, it’s important to minimize the opening of exterior doors, such as your front door, back door, basement door, or garage door. While it might seem trivial, avoiding the unnecessary opening of these doors significantly reduces the risk of warm air infiltrating your home, thereby enhancing your indoor climate control.

STAY AWAY FROM USING LARGE HEAT-INDUCING APPLIANCES

You should also stay away from using large heat-inducing appliances like the following:

  • Oven
  • Stove
  • Dryer
  • Dishwasher

These appliances will only add to the unnecessary heat in your home, making things hotter and stuffier while you wait for your technician to arrive.

CREATE YOUR OWN MAKESHIFT AC

Admittedly, this last suggestion is a bit creative, but it could be particularly helpful if you’re dealing with extreme heat. As they say, “Desperate times call for desperate measures!”

Did you know that you can create a personal cooling device using just two simple materials: ice and an electric fan? It may sound amusing, but it’s effective. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Gather some ice in a large bowl or container.
  1. Place the bowl in front of an electric fan.
  1. Turn the fan on.

Voila! You’ve created a makeshift air conditioner. The fan blows warm air onto the ice, which cools the air as it passes over, resulting in a refreshing breeze that can provide much-needed relief.

These tips will help you stay cool while waiting for your AC to be fixed. Remember, we are always here for you, dedicated to providing the best and most efficient service possible. No matter your HVAC needs, we have you covered! Don’t hesitate to give us a call—we’d be thrilled to provide you with our five-star service!
